Dear colleagues
I need some pointers from the combined wisdom of the list please.
I am advising a UK university on the commercial prospects of digitising a well known (to scholars) manuscript. The university is very strong in research but does not have the rich manuscript resources of e.g. the Bodleian. They do however see this manuscript as the jewel in their crown, and as the first of other candidates for digitisation.
The three broad options that I see for them are: a) go it alone - hosting, marketing, charging etc.; b) enter a partnership with other HEIs (Manuscripts Online?); c) licence to a commercial publisher such as Gale/Cengage.
I would very much appreciate your sharing, in confidence, any experience or opinions in this area (positive or negative), and any advice that I can pass on.
Many thanks in advance!
