RA21 <https://ra21.org/>  (Resource Access for the 21st Century) is a joint STM <http://www.stm-assoc.org/>  and NISO <http://www.niso.org/home/> initiative aimed at facilitating a seamless user experience for consumers of scientific communication when they seek access to scholarly resources, by optimizing protocols across key stakeholder groups, such as Libraries, ID management services, platform and content providers and publishers. 

 

The project aims to:

*	Recommend new solutions for access strategies beyond IP recognition
practices
*	Explain the standard measures that publishers, libraries and
end-users should undertake for better protocols and security
*	Test and improve solutions by organizing pilots in a variety of
environments for the creation of best practice recommendations

 

This morning event will provide an overview of the challenges RA21 is seeking to address, particularly where they apply to end users and librarians, provide an introduction to and update on all RA21 pilots and will actively engage attendees in taking forward plans for the two pilots being undertaken in the academic space, particularly in relation to the user experience. 

 

The morning will be followed by a networking lunch.

 

For anyone unable to attend in person, the plenary session will be made available remotely as the first in a series of webinars for RA21. Please ensure that you select the 'Remote participant' option when registering so that the relevant access information can be sent out to you.

An introduction to RA21 - programme

10.00 - 10.30      Registration and refreshments

10.30 - 11.30      Plenary session: The plenary session will provide an
overview of the challenges RA21 is seeking to address, and provide an introduction and update on all RA21 pilots. [Register as a Remote Participant to access this session as a webinar.]

11.30 - 12.30      UX session: The project will report on progress in
improving the experience of those accessing scholarly resources at provider platforms and engage participants in reviewing the design and pathways.

12.30 - 13.30      Lunch & networking

 

The afternoon will be reserved for those actively participating in the academic pilot working groups to take forward those initiatives. About the Academic pilots:

 

RA21 Privacy Preserving Persistent WAYF Pilot (P3W)

The RA21 Privacy Preserving Persistent WAYF (P3W) pilot seeks to validate the use of SAML-based federated authentication technologies to provide seamless access to scholarly resources for authorized users at participating institutions. The pilot seeks to demonstrate how institutional login credentials can be leveraged to provide a similar level of seamless access to scholarly resources that today's IP address authentication provides through significantly streamlined Where Are You From (WAYF) UI flows whilst preserving the privacy of the end user.

 

The pilot will include participants at academic institutions that subscribe to scholarly resources, publishers, educational access management federations, vendors and service providers.

 

WAYF Cloud Pilot

The WAYF Cloud pilot seeks to validate the use of a cloud service to facilitate the exchange of information between publisher platforms for the purpose of Identity Provider discovery.
 
The pilot will leverage academic authentication systems for user access to publisher platforms and will demonstrate how the exchange of information between publisher platforms can reduce the repetition of user actions across publishers and provide the same type of seamless access to scholarly resources that today's IP address authentication provides.

Participants in the WAYF Cloud pilot will include academic organizations, service providers, publisher with content on the Literatum platform from Atypon and publishers with content on other publishing platforms willing to integrate their platforms to the WAYF Cloud service (it may also be necessary to include their platform vendors).
