Hi Zac
Could they have been continuations of fence boundaries across the river? Other wise no idea
Best wishes

Subject: Stone posts in a river
Hi all
I've been contacted by a member of the public asking for advice on a number of stone posts recorded during a woodland survey in Gillfield Wood, Sheffield. These posts occur generally in twos and occasionally threes in at least 11 locations along a fast-flowing, narrow river leading into Sheffield. They are aligned across the river and have iron fittings, fixed in lead, with notches on the upstream side.
Apparently they're not visible on historic mapping. There was a water-powered site a mile or so downstream in operation from 1612 or earlier until probably c1900.
She has suggested they could be remains of silt traps, as there were known problems with silt at the sites downstream. That seems reasonable, but I wondered if anyone had any parallels or comments?
Cheers!
