A vacancy has arisen for a GIS specialist with web GIS expertise to work within Public Health England’s Emergency Response Department (ERD) at Porton Down near Salisbury. This post provides an excellent opportunity to work as part of a small, integrated multidisciplinary team in a focused and friendly environment. Working with both internal ERD and PHE colleagues and external collaborators, you will utilise, develop and maintain innovative GI systems to meet the emergency response requirements of ERD and the requirements of the wider organisation. Working within ERD Science & Technology (ERD S&T) you will have a particular focus on the study of, preparedness for and response to high impact emerging infectious disease threats and bioterrorism as well as a wider PHE focus on administering and utilising PHE’s enterprise web GIS platform for monitoring, surveillance and response to a range public health threats. You will also provide PHE wide desktop GIS support and training.
You will be educated to post-graduate degree level in GIS, Geography, Computer Science or a scientific subject with a significant GIS component. Ideally you will have extensive experience of GIS software (preferably ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Server/ArcGIS Enterprise) and of their application within Government, research or commercial organisations. You will have a wide range of skills covering the development of web GIS applications, the application of desktop GIS software and the management of spatial data and databases. You will be required to proactively manage specific components of GIS-based projects and provide technical expertise for the research and operational functions of the GIS team. Good communication skills are a must, as well as enthusiasm to learn new skills.
