Dear Malcolm and colleagues,
In our experience it depends on the complexity and level of arrangement of the backlog. Speed increases over time if the cataloguers are experts and acquire the necessary knowledge. I do not have formula to calculate this but can share the outputs of our work to tackle complex unsorted medieval Court of Common Pleas backlogs in Latin. Twice during the project the team worked at Deepstore, with relevant boxes being delivered to Kew in batches. The logistics were challenging and also included work to re-unite partial files and handling of very large files which required more than one box.
I'll go back to a couple of reports and my update for TNA's accreditation in January and will email you some figures.
Best regards
Jone

Subject: Calculating time to catalogue backlogs
I am sorry, as I am sure this question has been asked before, but has anybody a "rule-of-thumb" calculation for cataloguing x boxes of archives?
Thanks
