Dear John,
Unless you are getting automatic security updates from Microsoft,
which many people are, you need to do two things before you use the
machine for any other purpose.
1) Update your anti-virus software
2) Download and apply the latest security patches for the version of
Windows on your machine - use Windows Update, or the equivalent for
your version of the OS. If you have a really old PC Microsoft have
released patches for these too -

PS - WANNACRYPT does damage by encrypting your files. If all comes
to all, and you have backup, you can just restore your files from it.
