Yan Preston, Yangtze the Mother River: Photography, Myth and Mapping
'The award-winning photographer Yan Wang Preston will talk about her practice-based PhD project Yangtze The Mother River. The presentation will start by introducing the project in which the 6,211km Yangtze River was photographed with a precise interval of every 100 kilometres. The emphasis of this talk is on the discovery of the mythic nature of Yangtze The Mother River, in which a combined methodology of photographic observation, contextual research and ‘emplacement’ is employed. Such ‘emplacement’ refers to the bodily interventions and social engagements employed by the photographer, who becomes a temporary Yangtze resident. The body is used to collect information impossible to gain by any other means while the landscapes acquire new meaning in this process.’
Diego Ferrari - artist and photographer Diego Ferrari’s work interrogates the relationship between social values and public spaces, with a particular interest in the relationship between the body and its environment, articulating modes of individual and collective experiences and social relations. He studied Fine Art at the LLotga School in Barcelona, completed a Fine Art BA at Goldsmith’s College University of London and was awarded an MA in Art & Architecture at the University of Canterbury. He exhibits internationally and teaches in the course on “Photography, Art and Architecture” at Central Saint Martins and on the BA in Fine Art Photography at Kingston University and currently he is the course leader on Photography, Architecture and the City at The Enric Miralles foundation, Barcelona.
