In transition: Debates linking trans-health issues and social justice in Catalonia DrGerard Coll-PlanasCentre for Interdisciplinary Gender Studies, University of VicThursday 11th May 2017@ 1-2pm County Main SR 1 The first (illegal) demonstration for sexual freedom in Spain was held in Barcelona in 1977. It was led by transsexual women and transvestites. It was also in Barcelona where the first transvestite and transsexual association was founded (1978); where the first specifically trans demonstration took place (2007) and where the international campaign “Stop TransPathologization” kicked off (2009). That is why Barcelona is said to be a “trans-city”.Now that the Catalan Government is supporting the demands of the trans community, trans activism is living a crucial moment: it has the opportunity to co-design and co-produce a non-pathologizing healthcare model for trans people. In this context, exciting debates are taking place. How can we translate political vindications into actual public policy? Which treatments and types of support are appropriate for underage children with non-normative gender identities? What are the consequences and benefits of investing in non-pathologizing models of health and social care? and what are the implications for social justice?
Dr Gerard Coll-Planas is a medical sociologist and activist. He is the Director of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Gender Studies at Vic University (Catalonia). He has published extensively on trans people’s experiences, LGBTQI rights and legislation, embodiment and health and breast cancer. He coordinated a EU funded project on homophobia and policy. Gerard is passionate about translating academic debates intoillustrated books, animated clips, exhibitions or talks usingpop culture.
