Archives Assistant (Graduate Trainee)

Bodleian Libraries are seeking to appoint an Archives Assistant (Graduate Trainee) in Oxford University Archives, part of the Department of Special Collections. The University Archives is responsible for the administrative records of the University itself, dating from the 13th century to the present. Trainees will benefit from on-the-job training, professional and social support, and a varied programme of weekly training events (talks, workshops, library visits, and IT training) operated under the SCONUL Code of Practice.
The post is an excellent opportunity for someone wishing to gain experience before seeking a professional archive qualification. Based in the Bodleian and Weston Libraries, your duties will include answering enquiries, transferring documents from storage to the reading rooms and back again, planning and configuring storage accommodation, sorting and listing documents, and assisting with the general administration of the Archives. The Archives office is situated at the top of a narrow staircase and some lifting and carrying of heavy volumes is involved. You will also have some reading room duties in the Weston Library.
You will be educated to degree level and have some previous experience of working in an archive or special collections service. You will also have an informed awareness of the work involved in archives administration and a genuine desire to develop skills in advance of taking a postgraduate qualification and pursuing a career in the field.
This is a full-time, fixed-term position for one year from 1 September 2017. Please do not apply if you have already taken, or are currently taking a postgraduate archive qualification.
