Dear all
We welcome you back after the Easter break with news that the University of Kent’s Templeman Library has become the latest organisation to join the Digital Preservation Coalition, making it the twenty-fifth University to do so.
The library’s digital preservation activities focus on digitised and born-digital collections curated by Information Services on behalf of the University. These include research data sets, research outputs, and archive material cared for by Special Collections & Archives, as well as images created by the Digital Imaging team services, and associated metadata held within digital files and within catalogues/databases.
These areas generate and collect increasing amounts of digital data which have been identified as being vital to the University of Kent’s teaching and research requirements, business needs, and cultural identity.
“We see our DPC membership as a way to ensure that we are following best practice for preserving and providing access to this unique digital material, and that we are providing a good service which meets, and ideally exceeds, the needs of our library users,” explains the University of Kent’s Digital Archivist Elspeth Millar.
“We are very excited to join such a collaborative coalition which emphasises the importance of sharing knowledge and expertise in the areas of digital curation and digital preservation.”
Chair of the DPC Board and Deputy Keeper of the National Records of Scotland, Laura Mitchell welcomed the news saying, “we are delighted that the University of Kent has joined the DPC alongside many other colleagues from Higher Education and research. Universities have shown impressive leadership in recognizing and tackling their digital preservation challenges; and by joining the coalition Kent creates more space for us to work together to ensure future generations enjoy access to our incredibly important digital legacy.”
The DPC helps members to deliver resilient long-term access to digital content and services, helping them to derive enduring value from digital collections. The coalition also raises awareness of the attendant strategic, cultural and technological challenges and supports members through advocacy, workforce development, capacity-building and partnership.
