Description:
The purpose of this job is to carry out the mission of the American Psychological Association – to advance the creation, communication, and application of psychological knowledge to benefit society and improve people’s lives – in relation to society’s response to disability, both mental and physical, and to the lives of people with disabilities. This purpose is carried out by raising awareness of issues related to disability within the association, by using psychology to reduce prejudice, stigma, and discrimination toward people with disabilities and to improve their health, welfare, and psychological well-being, and by promoting equal opportunity for persons with disabilities in APA and all areas of psychology.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
* Minimum educational requirement is a Master’s degree in psychology or
closely related field
* Minimum of 5 years of increasingly responsible management and program
development experience in a not-for-profit organization that included both budget and personnel supervision
* Needs experience that demonstrates a substantive and broad knowledge
of both mental and physical disabilities
* Needs experience that demonstrates skill in interacting effectively
with and a broad understanding of the needs of persons with disabilities in order to promote their optimal participation in society
* Needs experience that demonstrates the ability to communicate,
coordinate, negotiate, collaborate, and build teams effectively with other APA staff members, members, boards and committees, the Board of Directors, the Council of Representatives, representatives of other organizations, and federal agency officials
* Needs experience that demonstrates a commitment to psychology in the
public interest, and understanding of psychological science, an appreciation of the benefits of applied psychology, and an awareness of education and training in psychology
* Needs experience that demonstrates skill in written communication and
use of social media

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide leadership, technical assistance, information and referral, and consultation as APA’s primary expert on disability issues in psychology, both mental and physical:
* Provide leadership on issues related to disability by promoting
awareness of these issues in psychological research, as well as specific research activity in these areas, and promoting inclusion of knowledge about disabilities in education, training programs, and the professional development of psychologists.
* Represent the interests and concerns of APA regarding issues related
to disability by serving on committees and advisory groups of national organizations and federal agencies. Attend meetings and functions as a representative of the Office and APA.
* Provide policy and interpretation, research referrals, issue-specific
information and data, publications, and some service delivery referrals related to disability (consistent with APA policy) to consumers, APA members, students, nonmember researchers, and other professional groups.
* Provide technical assistance, information and referral, consultation
and training to APA staff and APA members on issues relating to disability; provide technical assistance, information and referral, and consultation to external organizations and the public.
* Network and engage in collaborative efforts with other APA offices and
divisions, federal agencies, and other disability groups within professional organizations;
* Maintain liaison relationships with APA divisions, and affiliated
state, provincial, and territorial psychological associations.
Direct, coordinate, manage, and evaluate all activities of the APA Office on Disability Issues in Psychology:
* Determine office priorities and develop and implement office plans and
programs.
* Gather/analyze research and other substantive information relevant to
issues relating to disability from diverse sources.
* Develop print and online educational materials, information products,
and data resources relevant to research, policy, and practice related to disability, and implement strategies to disseminate these resources to the APA membership, other professionals, the public, and federal agencies.
* Monitor public policy, new bodies of research, litigation, judicial
decision-making, and executive initiatives related to disability.
* Supervise the Administrative Coordinator of the Disability Issues in
Psychology Office in preparing for and executing plans for APA Convention Resource Room for People with Disabilities, including coordination, training, and oversight of Resource Room volunteers.
* Provide direct supervision for one full-time administrative
coordinator.
* Prepare office budget and monitor budgeted office expenditures.
* Complete other duties as assigned.
Provide primary senior staff support to the APA Committee on Disability Issues and Psychology (CDIP), the Task Force Task Force on Serious Mental Illness and Severe Emotional Disturbance (TFSMI/SED), and other ad hoc groups as assigned:
* Direct governance activities and meeting preparations for CDIP and the
TFSMI/SED, including disability-related accommodations for members as needed, and development of meeting agendas.
* Gather/analyze information from disparate sources to direct CDIP and
TFSMI/SED projects and activities.
* Oversee the implementation of CDIP and the TFSMI/SED decisions,
projects, and activities.
* Initiate and coordinate CDIP’s and the TFSMI/SED’s interactions on
issues of mutual concern with entities internal (governance groups, other offices, divisions) and external (federal agencies, disability and mental health organizations) to APA.
* Facilitate cooperative and productive working relationships between
CDIP and the TFSMI/SED and with other APA staff, APA divisions, other governance groups, and other APA members.
* Represent CDIP, the TFSMI/SED, and ad hoc groups to other APA groups,
APA staff, APA Board of Directors and Council of Representatives, and to other organizations and agencies external to APA.
