The University of Helsinki, founded in 1640, is one of the world’s leading universities for multidisciplinary research. The university has an international academic community of 40,000 students and staff members. The University of Helsinki offers comprehensive services to its employees, including occupational health care and health insurance, sports facilities, and opportunities for professional development. The International Staff Services office assists employees from abroad with their transition to work and life in Finland.
The Department of Chemistry (http://www.helsinki.fi/kemia/english/) at the Faculty of Science carries out research on chemistry and its applications at an international level and provides academic teaching based on high quality research. The department forms accountability unit operating on an annual budget of 19 million euros and reports 270 person-years per annum. There are 15 professors at the Department.
The research performed in the Molecular science research unit at the Department of Chemistry is of highest international excellence. The current research areas appropriate in this context are laser spectroscopy, chemical kinetics and computational and theoretical chemistry.
The Department of Chemistry invites applications for a three-year fixed term
POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER
position starting from 1. May 2017 at the Kumpula Campus of the University of Helsinki. The starting date is negotiable. The research will be directed by Professor Lauri Halonen. The objective is to break new grounds by applying computational and theoretical chemistry to experimental problems of atmospheric interest.
The successful candidate is expected to carry out computational/theoretical research work in spectroscopy and dynamics. We are particularly interested in (1) infrared spectroscopy of water clusters and complexes of atmospheric importance, and in (2) chemical processes at different forms of water including water complexes, ice particles and the quasi-liquid layer of ice. A close collaboration is expected with experimentalists of our group working on related new laser spectroscopic experiments using optical frequency combs to spectroscopy of ice surfaces.
The molecular spectroscopy and theoretical chemistry group lead by Prof. Halonen consists of about 10 scientists, and has excellent computational and experimental facilities including commercial and home-built optical frequency combs and a new proton transfer mass spectrometer.
The salary of the successful candidate will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance.
