Bedford BC - OFFICIAL-Unsecure

I have seen this on the brass paperclips we used to buy but many years ago now I decreed that no paperclips should be used on our archives. Even if they don't rust they leave impressions in the paper, bulk out the packaging, catch on everything around them and/or fall off the thing they are supposed to be holding together.

We hold pages together in a simple fold of archival paper which we can write the reference and instructions on if necessary e.g. 3 pieces, it is even across the pages and therefore causes no bulges in the packaging and makes production much easier. The only issue we have is that as I'm right handed I ask that the fold is to the right but my left-handed staff (of which we seem to have a lot) would prefer the fold to be at the left.

I make no claims on 'inventing' this method at Bedfordshire it is what I was taught to do at Cheshire RO 25 years ago.

Hi

We looked at this in the University of St Andrews 15 years ago.

Armed with a friendly Geology Department, we analysed a range of different brass paperclips for their metal composition.

We did not find any particular difference in any of the modern ones analysed- what we did see was that the archive grade ones were thicker. This lead us to conclude that these were the best. We also noted that, because of their ready availability in bulk, these were also ultimately more economical.

This was a one-off study and was for our own information only. It should not be taken as definitive.

A curious one... We purchased some ‘archive quality’ brass paperclips a couple of years back, and to our concern have discovered that some of them are dulling/developing a coating… It’s in an area of our cellar which we know has some humidity issues, and at least at the moment none of the residue is coming off onto the paper - but even so it seems like Not Good News.

We have not got very far in conversation with the supplier so far. So I was just wondering if anyone else has come across this phenomenon, and if so if you have any tips for dealing with it?

Thanks folks, Lynette
