Role
We are seeking to appoint an outstanding Reader to work within the Faculty of Health, Psychology and Social
Care. The primary focus of this role would be to contribute to the development of ageing research across the
university, which has significant financial support from the senior management team at Manchester Metropolitan University.
This post would be specifically focused on dementia and neural ageing research, but will incorporate work focused on other areas where appropriate, which include: sexual health and wellbeing, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), frailty, care homes, emergency medicine, ophthalmology, rehabilitation, technology and active ageing.
The successful participant would be expected to liaise and work with the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
The research centre are committed to creative, participatory, and inclusive research that can improve the lives
of older people and people living with long-term conditions.
Ideal Candidate
You will have a doctoral level qualification in a relevant area and evidence of continuous professional
development. You will have the ability to build relationships and establish networks with internal and external contacts. You will be able to prepare funding proposals and applications to external bodies. Using your initiative, you will use your creativity and judgement to develop appropriate approaches to research and will be able to synthesise complex data from different sources and to communicate findings via written reports for a variety of audiences.
The primary focus of the role will be to support the development of high quality research within the Centre,
and so experience of writing bids for research funding is highly desirable. The successful applicant will also
be able to demonstrate an established track record of publication in high quality peer reviewed journals.
Expertise in, or a willingness to learn, how to develop pathways to impact for research through public
engagement activities, including the use of social media, is also desirable.

To support and strengthen our world-leading research within the elite area of Vascular Pathology (Dementia
Research), The successful candidate will drive research within this area employing genetics, epigenetics, big
data and cell biological techniques to dissect novel signalling pathways associated with neurological
degeneration.
Ideal Candidate
The candidate should be an independent neuroscientist with a strong record of accomplishment in developing
and leading excellent research within this field. Specifically, the applicant should have a thorough understanding of the mechanisms of stroke and dementia pathophysiology and cell and molecular techniques including genetics/epigenetics, cell signalling,
angiogenesis and other molecular approaches encompassing in vitro and in vivo disease modelling.
We are looking for a highly motivated independent scientist with an international reputation and a history of
strong publication and external grant income in their field. The candidate should have experience of teaching
at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Biomedicine.
