I agree with you, that design can serve in creating the tools to establish
conditions for social collaboration and participation. And neither am I
sure if Design should be seen just about technological innovation, or
product creation if there is no innovation. But it seems like the focus is
still on products, even when it is about improving life conditions, just
take a look at the INDEX AWARD winners of previous editions, maybe I'm
wrong to put them in the same category with social design, as they are not
branded as such. Yet I get the impression that there is usually an
embodiment of a solution, which could as well be sustained by the norms of
the industrial model, and I don't mean that the industrial model of
production is wrong, but it predefines and imposes certain ways in which
the social actors interact. Maybe, new production technologies will also
help in leveraging how Design can impact in the "social" layer.
Thank you for opening this discussion. I'm looking forward to what others
will contribute.

I share your point of vue. I think that codesign and collaborating with
communities are necessary. Designing collaboration and engaging tools to
make connections happen are also necessary. I am not sure that design is
about technological innovation (not only at least ). I think that too many
questions might be duscussed about social design as you said.

Hi all.
This is my first time writing here.
I guess Azza, that you are starting from the point of view of Viktor
Papanek' Design for the real world. Which is an interesting way of
conceptualizing the aims of Design. Yet I think the use of the wording
"social" and "design" can be a bit problematic, as the design intention is
not actually creating any new social connections, but rather technological
innovations that are usually made according to the pre existent social and
economical conditions of a human group to whom the designer designs for.
So, I think a better approach is the one of design for social innovation
(or social change) which sets the intervention of the social layer as a
goal. I think, that as designers we can work better from that perspective.
Maybe you would like to read Ezio Manzini's book Design, When everybody
designs. I guess this topic will be very important in the decade to come,
hopefully more discussion about it will also led to redefine Design as a
practice.
Best regards.
