Archivist - Swire Collection (Maternity Cover), SOAS University of London

Salary Range: £34,957 - £41,136 pro rata per annum inclusive of London Allowance
Part time (21 hours per week – 0.6 FTE, Days of work to be confirmed)

About the SOAS Library

SOAS Library is one of the world’s most important academic libraries for the study of Africa, Asia and the Middle East, which attracts scholars from all over the world to conduct research. The Library houses over 1.3 million volumes at the SOAS campus at Russell Square in central London, together with significant archival holdings, special collections and a growing network of electronic resources. The role and its responsibilities

The purpose of this post is to administer and catalogue the Swire Archives and to provide front-line services for users.  The post-holder will have special responsibility for the Swire Collection, undertaking cataloguing and preservation work, advising on records management procedures and providing a service for user both at SOAS and at Swire House.

Skills and experience

The successful applicant will be educated to degree level or equivalent, with a post-graduate qualification in Archives and/or Records Management.  You will have excellent communication, IT, presentation, planning and organisational skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.  You will ideally have an interest in international and Commonwealth history, or business history, particularly with reference to East Asia and John Swire and Sons, knowledge of automated cataloguing systems for archives, in particular CALM, and experience with reprographic services and digitisation, including familiarity with copyright law.

This post is fixed-term maternity cover until 30 April 2018 in the first instance.

Please note that it will not be possible for SOAS to issue a Certificate of Sponsorship for successful candidates as the pro-rata salary will not meet the minimum threshold set by UK Visas and Immigration. Successful candidates will therefore need to be eligible to work in the UK or have limited leave to remain in the UK and associated right to work for the duration of their employment with SOAS, in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006.
