If this is simply a matter of returning the ID to an address given by the sender, I see no issue. You have a defensible position.
You might want to advise the sender to use a "recorded delivery" system, which would provide you with some evidence, that might include the sender's address or at least the postal area from which it was sent. I presume you will use a similar tracked service to return the original documents - if you only accept originals.
