if you look at this video of the earth moving in an earthquake, you can
get an idea of the kinds of effects that would happen to the top few cms
with the regular daily heat/cooling cycle. Note in particular the cars
that seem to have sunk!
Also another video describing the effect of an earthquake - but daily
heat/cooling is similar!
