/Ed Owles / UK / 2014 / 85 mins
The film received a commendation for the *RAI Film Prize* at the RAI
Festival of Ethnographic Film, 2015
/The oldest auction house in India is fighting for survival in the age
of eBay and a changing Calcutta. Its two owners, brothers Anwer and
Arshad, struggle to save their family business, which still brings
together people from across Indian society to this day. Against the
backdrop of the brothers’ heartfelt and amusing relationship, the
magical world of the auction house is uniquely placed to provide an
intimate insight into the challenges and contradictions of making a
living in a country of one billion people.
Reviews:
"Featuring enough funnily juicy material to fuel a long running sitcom,
/The Auction House: A Tale of Two Brothers/ blends its personal and
ethnographic themes in expertly entertaining fashion." Hollywood Reporter
“The Auction House is intimate and funny…” IndieWire
“A wry and endearing look at a hidden India” India Worldwide
“A beautifully made and captivating film…” London Open City Film Festival
