Dear Colleagues,
This morning, I delivered an updated version of may Research Writing Workshop at Politecnico di Milano. The updated Powerpoint slide deck is now online at:

Please feel free to use this in your own teaching, or make it available in your digital resource collection for research skills.
Today’s lecture took place using Skype and screen sharing. I was in Kalmar, Sweden, working with Luca Guerrini and 50 students in Milan. This was a new experience for me. I’m waiting on feedback from the students. It seems like a good way to work — reducing my carbon footprint while communicating useful information and teaching valuable skills. While I’ll go to Milano for a week of face-to-face activity next week, screen sharing makes it possible for students to upload writing samples while I demonstrate editing changes on-screen.
This offers useful possibilities for research skills and methods courses. I can see using this system for workshops on writing and editing, effective reviewing for journal articles and conference papers, and the lecture components of workshops on research methods courses and comparative methodology. I suspect this would be less successful in workshops that require demonstrating closely coordinated hand-and-eye work. While those kinds of projects can be demonstrated in carefully edited online tutorials, working side by side with students or workshop participants adds dimensions that would be difficult online. I do think that the method would work for certain kinds of performance skills where a live coach might work from a distance of several meters.
At any rate, it was a useful experience for me, and — I hope — for the students. Feel free to download the Powerpoint deck. Use it as you wish.
