I do not know if there is any study earlier. You can automatically
create axial lines using Axwoman 6.3: http://fromto.hig.se/~bjg/axwoman/
However, for city scale, I would not recommend use axial lines. Instead
I suggest natural streets which are more robust than axial lines.
