University of Nottingham
Research Associate/Fellow in 3D Spectral Decomposition of Galaxies
Applications are invited for an STFC-funded Research Associate/Fellow
position to study the properties of nearby galaxies, particularly developing
techniques for separating these systems into their distinct components based
on integral field unit (IFU) spectral observations, and analysing the
stellar populations and dynamics of these components to reconstruct their
formation histories. Professors Michael Merrifield and Alfonso
Aragon-Salamanca hold membership of SDSS-IV, which will allow the
researcher working with them in this role to obtain immediate access to the
data from the MaNGA project, which is obtaining IFU observations of some
10,000 nearby galaxies.
A relevant PhD or near completion is essential, as is previous experience
of handling IFU data and modelling the spectral properties of galaxies.
This full-time post is fixed-term for three years, available from April 1
2017.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Professor Michael Merrifield,
tel: +44 115 951 5186 or email [log in to unmask] Please
note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be
accepted; applicants should complete the online submission process by the
deadline of February 1 2017, attaching a copy of their CV and publication
list, and a one-page covering letter describing their research interests
and the names of two referees.
