PhD Design Community,
What would the world look like if a Designer worked at the top level of the
US Commerce Department, the Treasury, or the Pentagon?
In 2012 President Obama founded the White House Presidential Innovation
Fellows program to bring top innovators and designers into the highest
levels of the US government and directly create radical change. Now
wrapping its 3rd iteration, the program has been a sweeping success,
generating bi-partisan support for cost savings of billions of dollars and
tremendous improvements in federal operations. Some examples can be found
here <https://presidentialinnovationfellows.gov/projects>.
Now moving into a new era, the PIF program is shifting in composition, and
is focussed on detailing Fellows into government agencies to lead internal
transformation efforts at those agencies. For 2017, Fellows will lead
federal initiatives on wide efforts including smart cities, humanitarian
relief, national security and veterans benefits.
As a Fellow, for the last year I have had the incredible opportunity to
tackle entrenched and complex socio-technical problems ranging from service
design within veterans affairs to mitigating the culture of
over-classification in intelligence agencies. In the coming year, I will
bring design to the issue of nuclear non-proliferation and diplomacy at the
State Dept, a process which has otherwise gone unchanged since the Cold War.
With clear challenges ahead for the American government, I urge anyone and
everyone to apply who seeks new futures. For some projects, US Citizenship
is necessary, but it is not mandatory for the fellowship.

The application is short but the possible impact is profound. Deadline Dec
