Call for Papers: Paper Session(s) at the International Conference
The Value of Life: Measurement, Stakes, Implications
Wageningen University, The Netherlands
28-30 June 2017
Many have observed that the current ecological crisis emerges from our ways of relating to the world as largely dead matter and an inert backdrop for human drama and life. Turning to 'new materialism' and vitalist ontologies, scholars are calling for forms of environmentalism that take "livingness" of the world seriously and place life as a category of thought at the centre of analytical inquiry. In this paper session, we seek to ask what it means to value the flow of life that connects us with the rest of the world. How can we enact such environmentalism and foster ways of valuing life that are attentive to socio-nature encounters and possibilities of co-becoming and co-flourishing?
Querying our value regimes (what we value and how) and our conceptions of life, this panel engages alternate social practices of valuing life - attentive to interdependence, care for the others, and a concern for enabling and enhancing quality and dignity of life. Seeking to connect lived practices with emerging academic attention on new materialism, vitalist ontologies and affective relationality, we are looking for empirically grounded and/or theoretically inspired papers that examine different facets of valuing life, affective socionature encounters and emergences. Empirical accounts of valuing vitality might focus on activities such as agriculture, extraction, biodiversity conservation, natural heritage, gardening, animal care and breeding, laboratory investigation, bioart, or food practices. We welcome contributions that include, but are not limited to, attention to the following aspects:
1. Theoretical and/or empirical exploration of alternate conceptions of value, attentive to affective relations, more-than-human labour, etc
2. Biopolitics and biopower - that engages not only interventions to discipline life, but explore the power of life to escape disciplining and birth new ways of being.
3. Value creation that unfolds in affective socio-nature encounters and relationality.
4. Alternate value regimes emerging from valuing vitality in a range of activities.
5. How do different value regimes foster new ethical subjectivities?
6. How does attention on affective socio-nature relationality leads to ways of valuing life that bring together (economic) value and (ethical) values?
