The mission was disastrous for Joseph. On his way to Italy he was captured by pirates who brought him to Crete (conquered by Muslims in 827) where he was held prisoner for over a year, perhaps as many as six.

Can you explain why St. John the Hymnographer's mission to Pope Gregory IV was "disastrous?" I am travelling and don't have access to the usual reference books.
