Assistant Archivist (9 Month Maternity Cover)

Summary of the Role:

The Bank of England Archive is looking to recruit an experienced cataloguing archivist as maternity cover from March 2017. The post is for 9 months with the possibility of extension up to 12 months.

Summary of the Team/Division:

The Archive Team is part of the Secretary’s Department which is responsible for supporting the Court of Directors and the other key governing committees of the Bank. The Department also includes the Bank’s Records Management function and its Information Centre.

Based in Threadneedle Street, the Bank of England Archive is one of the leading business archives in the country and is of national and international importance. The Archive holds over 80,000 items covering all aspects of the Bank’s history and operations since it was established in 1694. As well as meeting the internal needs of the business, the Archive is open by appointment to external researchers four days a week. The current team comprises the Archive Manager, four professional Archivists, and an Archive Assistant. A Collaborative Doctoral Award PhD student is also attached to the Archive. 

Detailed Description of the Role:

To cover a period of maternity leave starting in March 2017 the Archive is looking to recruit a cataloguing archivist to work on a varied collection of material from one of the Bank’s core areas, Financial Stability. The Archive is currently moving from a 30 to 20 year-release period in line with The National Archives and is now processing records from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s. This period covers significant developments within the Bank and in the wider economy, including changes in the operation of monetary policy, bank failures, ‘Big Bang’, privatisation, alteration to supervisory arrangements, central bank independence, and much more. Files from the Financial Stability area reflect many of these activities, and will be consulted by internal and external users. 

Reporting to the Archive Manager, the post will make a critical contribution to the achievement of the Archive’s cataloguing objectives and through this, will aid the wider understanding of the Bank and its work. 

Duties and responsibilities:

- Appraise and review material for the Archive
- Research and write administrative histories
- Catalogue material to professional standards and according to Bank of England Archive guidelines
- Identify sensitive information and apply appropriate restrictions
- Assist in the development of reviewing and cataloguing policy
- Identify material for conservation
- Undertake other duties as required

Personal development is encouraged by the Bank of England and Archive staff have opportunities to attend relevant training courses and conferences and to participate in the activities of professional and advocacy bodies such as the Archives & Records Association and the Business Archives Council.

Job Requirements:

Essential:
- To hold a professional archive qualification and/or equivalent
- To have a detailed knowledge of current professional standards
- Extensive post-qualification experience of appraising and cataloguing large complex collections
- To have an understanding of issues around sensitivity of information
- Accuracy and attention to detail
- To be able manage workload and meet agreed deadlines
- Ability to communicate with confidence at all levels
- To work with minimum of supervision
- Strong team-working skills
- Good general IT knowledge

Desirable:
- Experience of working in a corporate archive setting
- Experience of using CALM
