Public Lecture: From Physical Education (PE) to Physically Activity Learning (PAL): Embracing the new Paradigm
Guest Speaker: Dr Oscar Mwaanga (Southampton Solent University and EduMove)
Venue: Newman University, Birmingham, Genners Lane, Bartley Green, B32 3NT (Room ST111)
Date: Tuesday 15th November 2016
Time: From 6:30 for 7pm start time.

This public lecture - aimed at practitioners, teachers, academics and students - sets out to unpack a new paradigm in school-based sport and exercise, known as Physical Activity Learning (PAL), by critically examining its rationales and evidence basis. The work of EduMove in Southampton and on the Isle of Wight is used as case study to contextualize this new paradigm. Dr Oscar Mwaanga is passionate about innovatively using physical activity, sport and technology to promote health, learning and well-being especially for children and young people. He is a social-entrepreneur & CEO of the social enterprise called EduMove Group Limited.

Albert Einstein defined insanity as “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Developments urbanization, technology, transport and the focus on core academic such as English and Math as opposed to PE have all led to an exponential growth of sedentary cultures in our schools. These demands that seem to collaborate to foster sedentary behaviors are steadily increasing. The educational, health and economic ramifications are well documented. Undeniably, the is no better time than now for schools to respond with sustainable and innovative solutions.
As such, the way we deliver PE and Physical Activity in schools must adapt and evolve accordingly considering the demands and opportunities of our contemporary society. Recently, the way in which physical activity is promoted in schools is beginning to change with adaptable schools now thinking outside of the box and beginning to shy away from pure PE and school sports as the only means to improve physical activity. Specifically, these adaptable schools are exploring Physically Active Learning (PAL) methodologies and how these approaches could be beneficial as whole system approaches that not only promotes physical activity but improves academic engagement and attainment, enjoyment in learning and psychosocial wellbeing in children.

About Our Speaker:

Dr Oscar Mwaanga is an Associate Professor at Southampton Solent University, Fellow of the Royal Scoeity of Art (RSA) and editor of the Journal Sport for Development (JSFD). 2016 marks 20 years of pioneering work and leadership in International Sport for Development (SDP) for Oscar. In 1996 he founded EduSport Foundation (www.edusport.org.zm ) as the first SDP organisation in Zambia and one of the first in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). As such, he has been recognized as one of the global leaders for recent SDP movement. Over the past two decades, Oscar has led the development innovative programmes that have impacted communities in over 30 countries. Some of the SDP programmes he has pioneered include Kicking AIDS Out ( www.kickingaidsout.net), Go Sisters and international inspirations (www.internationalinspiration.org/women-and-girls ), SDP peer leadership, Green Sport and Fair Game Football. His recent work in EduMove innovatively addresses physical inactivity, childhood obesity and disengaged learning. He haspublished and presented widely in my areas of interest (e.g. http://thecommonwealth.org/media/event/commonwealth-debate-sport-and-sustainable-development). His dream is to contribute towards the transformation of global educational systems from sedentary and disengaged learning to a physically active and engaging using approaches supported by technology.

We look forward to welcoming you to Newman University for this special event.

Best

Stefan
