italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
A very dear man, who will be missed by many. I have very fond memories
of his extraordinarily kind and generous teaching and mentorship at
Berkeley in the 1980's, soon after he had finished his multi-volume
anthology dedicated to teaching Italian literature to college
undergraduates.
He also wrote a marvelously entertaining account of the intellectual
life of two of the founders of the new historicism, the art historian
Svetlana Alpers and the scholar of English literature and culture
Stephen Greenblatt, who were at Berkeley at the time. If anyone has a
copy of this essay, perhaps they could share a link to it here? The
essay might be the one here: "Odisseo e una mappa letteraria
d'America," Belfagor (March 1982).
At any rate, a wonderful man, who will be deeply missed.
