Elsje van Kessel (University of St Andrews), ‘Painting the Family: Irene di Spilimbergo, Titian, and the Portrait as Surrogate’
Giorgio Vasari already pointed out the importance of family portraiture in Venice, and this talk takes his words as a starting point to examine the roles portraits played within the lifecycle of the individual as well as the clan. It will focus especially on portraits of the Spilimbergo family, created in the circle of Titian, and the discussions they sparked about the impact of painted portraits on matters of life and death.
