this might seem like a cop-out but I think you'll have to ask them - for
instance in Ireland the organisation 'Little People of Ireland' is the
representative for 'people with restricted growth' while I don't think they
object to 'people with dwarfism' per se they draw the line at the m word
(rhymes with fidget). Little people of Ireland has connotations here (with
fairies) which the people with restricted growth have embraced - it might
be deeply offensive elsewhere. Also I've also found that people love being
asked from the get go how they prefer to be referred to - it sets the
conversation off on a tone of respect

Subject: Correct Terminology

Hi
I was wondering if anyone could help me with the correct terminology to use
with regards to skeletal dysplasia in more lay terms. Is 'people with
dwarfism' correct or is it an offensive term?
The same goes for 'hunchback' (excuse the term). Would spinal deformation
be a correct term to use?
I am asking this to use in my thesis on disability in developing countries
and would greatly appreciate if anyone could help me with this.
Kind regards,
Lara
