**2nd Call, APOLOGIES FOR CROSS POSTING**
Call For Papers
AAG 2017 Boston (April 5-8, 2017)
Session title: Destruction and creation – economic geographies of urban revitalisation
Organisers:
Bong-kyung, Jeon, University College London (UCL); [log in to unmask]
Stefania, Fiorentino, University College London (UCL); [log in to unmask]
Innovatory milieus are regarded as pivotal in facilitating the economic development of cities and industrial clusters engendering reciprocity between diverse stakeholders within particular territories. The factors and circumstances triggering the innovative record of cities and clusters vary, as there are many different examples of geographical localization and innovative configuration depending on social and institutional contexts.
Much of the empirical research on the revival of cities and industrial clusters is partial in its coverage - focusing on high-technology, growing and dynamic industrial regions with an emphasis on the traditional ingredients of proximity and learning process. However, there is a dearth of studies focusing on less-innovatory regions (e.g., seemingly low-tech and stagnant or old industrial clusters) and ostensibly new industrial sectors (e.g. creative industries and the makers movement) which speak to the problems and prospects of urban economic revitalisation.
This call seeks to explore a diversity of cases, factors contributing to, and geographies of urban economic revitalisation, hitherto less explored. We welcome papers on the subject of:
• Digital fabrication activities (the Makers movement)
• The role of institutions in urban regional revitalisation
• Creative industries and urban economic development
• The upgrading of old and low-tech industrial clusters
• Regional innovation systems and policy in old industrial regions
• Urban regional path dependence, lock in , cluster evolution and smart specialisation
Interested participants should send an expression of interest, questions and/ or title and abstract of 250 words to Stefania Fiorentino or Bong-kyung, Jeon by October 18, 2016. Participants will be notified by October 21 if their paper has been accepted for the session. They will then need to register for the conference and submit their abstract through the AAG website. Please forward your registration code (PIN) to us after you have submitted the abstract (by October 25).
Kind regards,
