Dear friends - and especially South and Highland Asianists:
The Inaugural 2016/17 Seminar Series at The Kohima Institute will be a presentation titled: ‘Evangelising the Nation: Religion and Formation of Naga Political Identity’ by Prof John Thomas, based on his recent book of the same title published with Routledge.
Wednesday, 19 October 2016, 2-4pm, Conference Room, Japfü Hotel, Kohima, Nagaland, INDIA
Dr. John Thomas’ research has been on the role of religion in mediating the formation of cultural and political identities in South Asia. He has primarily worked on the relationship between caste, agrestic slavery and the shifting perspectives of missionaries on labour in 19th century Central Travancore; and the role played by the missionaries, the local church, and the colonial and post-colonial states in promoting and sustaining a particular understanding of Christianity, and how that came to have an impact on the formation and nature of Naga nationalism in India’s Northeast. John will be presenting his book, and will be joined by Dr. Melvil Pereira of the North Eastern Social Research Centre, who will act as discussant.
The Kohima Institute is a vibrant and growing intellectual community of scholars working on Highland Asia. It is based in Kohima, the administrative capital of Nagaland state. If you are traveling in India, please plan to visit Nagaland, and indeed keep a recent lecture, or notes on your latest research endeavours in your back pocket - as we will most certainly ask you to share!
Sincerest regards,
Dr Michael Heneise
