Volunteer Mentor

Hope for the Young

    Salary: Voluntary
    Location: London, Greater London
    Job Type; Voluntary
Category: Advice, Information , Support Worker
    Sectors: Youth/Children

Job Description

Hope for the Young is currently recruiting passionate Volunteer Mentors for our Mentoring Project in London. Hope for the Young supports young unaccompanied asylum-seekers and refugees aged 16-25, who are in education or those whose education has been interrupted.

Young asylum-seekers, who have arrived in the UK alone face a series of obstacles: language barriers, lack of social support, a long period of uncertainty while they wait for their immigration status to be decided, and disaffection during their appeal process.

The Mentoring Project at Hope for the Young aims to remove the obstacles vulnerable young refugees and asylum seekers face in getting an education, by training Volunteer Mentors to provide specialised support and advice that will enable vulnerable young people to reach their full potential whilst helping them during the difficult transition to life in the UK.

Volunteer Responsibilities

Our dedicated Volunteer Mentors spend 2-3 hours a week with a young person, providing tailored support according to their needs for an initial period of six months. Volunteer Mentors offer support by providing:

    One-to-one support
    Practical English language skills
    Study skills
    Enrolment advice
    Emotional support

Please read the attached Job Description and Person Specification for detailed information about the role and requirements to be a Volunteer Mentor.

Volunteer Benefits

As a volunteer, you will benefit from:

An induction and training program suited to the role of mentoring young refugees and asylum seekers
Regular meetings and support from the Project Manager
The opportunity to share experiences with other volunteers at regular volunteer meetings and social events.
Valuable experience in developing your mentoring skills with vulnerable young people.
The knowledge that you are making a huge and lasting difference to a young person’s life.
All reasonable expenses (e.g. travel and refreshments during meetings)

If you are passionate about helping vulnerable people achieve their full potential and believe you have what it takes to be a dedicated Volunteer Mentor for Hope for the Young, we would love to hear from you!
