Yes, it has always been understood that Allstat was not a "discussion
list", but that only meant that replies to posts should be 'off-list'
(with, where appropriate, a summary of thosee responses eventually being
posted to the list) - i.e. that responses/discussions should not appear on
the list. However, in addition to announcements related to jobs, meetings
etc., a substantial proportion of the initial posts have always related to
questions about statistics.
For what it's worth, since posting my message earlier today, I have
received many 'off-list' replies from people indicating that their
understanding of 'the rules' was the same as mine - with a few indicating
that if they were not allowed to post statistical questions, they would not
bother to remain members of Allstat.
