Usually there are too many inconsistencies between the data structures in the two IT systems to allow an easy import. My experience is that it is rarely done, except occasionally for Blood Bank data and possibly Histo/Cyto, etc.
You will also find that there is usually an extra (substantial) cost implication involved and no guarantee of data quality from the company involved.
The salesperson will probably give you the impression that data migration is easy when you're buying the system (typically..."Yes we can bring all your old data across if that's what you want.") but when you have the system bought the company's IT technical staff will try their best to put you off doing it by listing all the costs and risks involved that the salesperson forgot to mention when the sales pitch was going on!
It is probably best to keep your old LIMS system going in parallel for as long as is viable. Well before the old system eventually dies (or is out of service contract) make sure you have made a number of full backups of the data.
In my experience the 'old' data is rarely needed after a few years but there is the occasional research project and litigation case that will require you to look up the old data.
The other way of thinking about it is that Lab data/information is what we (Labs) spend many years producing and accumulating at relatively high cost - it would be sensible to hold on to it as long as possible, both in a secure media and in a (as much as it can be) future-proof media (i.e. floppy disks, etc, and a no no)! You could also import it all into a live Decision Support System if you have one (?separate database from your new system's data).
