Race, Place and Violence: Historical and Contemporary Issues
The rise of white nationalism and violence, along with efforts to remove racist and controversial symbols of white supremacy from public squares, as well as violence directed towards Syrian refugees and the worldwide effort to bring attention to BlackLivesMatter, is indicative of the contested and continued significance of race, place and violence for the understanding of Geography and the work of memory. Set against the backdrop of worldwide efforts to bring attention to the extrajudicial killing of racialized others and this session (or sessions) engages with the themes of race, violence and memory and with contemporary and historical issues of inequality. In particular, we are interested in papers that involve empirical and/or theoretical engagements and may include ideas about settler societies, landscape, critical race theory, memory studies and empirical/theoretical treatments of violence amongst others. Interested parties should send their abstract to:
