Hi
1) Lightweight account = anyone can sign up, basically all it does is allow you to join mail lists that are marked as "CERN emails only”. If you need to come on site a member of CERN personnel can get you a stay for as long as the event you are attending lasts.
2) External account = This is the full CERN computing account, but it doesn’t give you a CERN pass, so you can’t get on site. It also means a lot less paper work to be filled in. In order to get one of these accounts (as a WLCG member) you need either Jeremy Coles or Ian Collier to send in the request. If you need to come on site a member of CERN personnel can get you a stay for as long as the event you are attending lasts.
3) Full account = Full CERN computing account + access pass to site. This involves filling in forms and going to the user office.
Obviously unless you sign up with a VO, you won’t have access to their stuff. The guideline for getting a Full account rather than an External account is if you come to CERN 3 or more times a year.

P.S. This link (https://admin-eguide.web.cern.ch/en/procedure/visitors-cards-access-cern-visitors-and-conference-participants) provides information about what visitors need to do to gain access to site, however it is only available to those with a CERN account….
