If the debate on is going to drag on, it is worth pointing to two important facts. Several dozen first rate web sites already offer massive amounts of high quality design research resources.
1) There are already several free resources on design research. Several are reasonably comprehensive and well edited. Some are excellent. Several universities, public service organizations, and design firms provide massive free resources. Many university web sites offer resources on research and research methods across many fields. Some organizations focus on design such as IDEO and the not-for-profit IDEO.org web site, as well as the excellent Helsinki Design Lab legacy site and the still-accessible web site of M P Ranjan. Several design firms such as Dubberly or Nielsen Norman offer outstanding design research resources and significant free content. There are more.
2) Academia.edu and Researchgate aggregate massive amounts of excellent design research content by hundreds of outstanding researchers. This includes reprints of peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers, reports, working papers, preprints, and much more. Some authors prefer Academia. Some prefer Researchgate. Academia provides a search engine that allows readers to search by topic or author name. I assume that Researchgate has something similar. This is free and open access.
3) Four peer reviewed design journals make all our content available open access: Visible Language offers fifty years of first-rate content — new material comes online one year after publication; the new Design Science is open access; the International Journal of Design; and She Ji - the Journal of Design, Economics, and Innovation. Anyone who works or studies at a university can use their library access the full content of all the other first-rate journals in our field: Design Studies, Design Issues, the Journal of Engineering Design Research, and several more.
Terry's offer to sell a design research domain name made no sense to me. I did not want to debate this, but I wrote him off-list to say that. Terry owns only one design research domain name. He does not own every conceivable design research domain name. But that’s not the point — the point is whether anyone needs to build yet *another* web site for design research. There is no need to reinvent the wheel, and no need to buy a used wheel.
Facebook collects opinions, and most Facebook posts are tweet-lengths, or "like” notes, with the occasional cat video thrown in. The format is suitable for opinions, mistakes, and incorrect facts. The Facebook format does not suit corrections or reasoned debate. Why would anyone serious take the time and effort to manage a Facebook page on design research? The format is not suitable.
If someone is interested in managing useful information on design research, I’d welcome a list of the excellent web resources now available, together with links.
