Dear all,
We’d like to invite you to the seventh in our series of public lectures hosted by the Museum of the History of Science, Technology and Medicine at the University of Leeds, on "History & Philosophy of Science in 20 Objects."
The lecture will take place on Tuesday 27th September, 6:15-7:15pm, in the Rupert Beckett Lecture Theatre, and will be on "A Biblical Herbarium, or, A Story of Victorian Science and Religion."
The history of science is often thought of as a pitched battle between science and religion, enlightenment and dogmatism. But is that really the case? And how can a box containing plants named in the Bible -- a Biblical herbarium -- help us examine the issues afresh? In this lecture, historian of science Dr Jonathan Topham will use the Biblical herbarium in the Leeds collection to re-assess the thorny relationship between science and religion from the Victorian era to our own times.
