Dear all,

This, from Geo-Tectonics, is a very physics-biased PhD project
at the University of Bayreuth, Germany.
I assume that fluency in German would be useful.  I can't find
any information immediately about non-German eligibility
for a DFG grant.

1 PhD position
The grain boundary character distribution (GBCD) of olivine

Bayerisches Geoinstitut, Universität Bayreuth (Germany)
We search for a PhD candidate who is highly motivated to perform basic research with good communication skills in English. Basic knowledge in programming would be helpful. A master degree in Geology, Mineralogy, Physics, Chemistry and Engineering or equivalent is required for this position.

The project:
The grain boundary character distribution (GBCD) is a measure of the natural frequency of different grain boundaries; it is anisotropic and scale invariant for polycrystals without crystal preferred orientations. Based on these observations it was concluded that the GBCD is an intrinsic parameter related to the crystal structure. The GBCD gives the full 5 parameters needed to describe the geometry of a grain boundary, related to the grain boundary energy, figure 1. Properties of polycrystalline materials are strongly influenced by the network of their internal interfaces. This is because the properties of grain boundaries differ significantly from those of the ideal crystal lattice. For example, incompatible elements can be stored (segregated) on the grain boundary planes and element diffusion is orders of magnitude faster along grain boundaries than through the crystal lattice.
Various studies show that the GBCD changes with chemistry of the grain boundaries and modifications are readily observed at concentrations below 1 wt. %. These chemical impurities also influence the grain boundary energy, grain boundary mobility and its strengths.
In this project the effect of chemical variation (including the presence of melt) on the GBCD of olivine will be investigated. Such data are urgently needed to quantify grain boundary controlled processes in olivine dominated rocks, they may, for example, explain the large discrepancies in deformation experiments that seem to correlate with the materials purity.

The candidate will be trained to work independently combining high pressure laboratory experiments and direct analytical methods. He or she will be directed to identify and solve specific problems and questions. He/she will get insight into state-of-the-art techniques such as electron microscopy, ranging from SEM, EBSD to the usage of focused ion beam (FIB) machining and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations. The project allows for qualifying for future work in research or industry.

The institute: The Bayerisches Geoinstitut BGI at the University of Bayreuth is equipped with state-of-the-art experimental facilities and offers a unique scientific infrastructure for experimental research at high pressures and high temperatures and the possibility for international cooperation. The participation in the Graduate School BayNat at the University of Bayreuth allows for acquiring soft skills in various courses offered.
