Dear all
We're running a media training course in Manchester on 5 September. There's a discount made for bookings before 5 August - find out more at http://bit.ly/2apJPHn
The course is for anyone who may be giving or who would like to learn about handling media interviews. No prior knowledge is assumed.
Handling the media
5 September 2016
University of Manchester, University Place, Oxford Road, M13 9PL
CPD: 6 hours
Governments, large companies, university departments and charities regard preparation for media interviews as essential. It is easy to see why: interviews can and do go wrong; science and the media are disparate cultures and fragmentation of the media has created new pitfalls. One ill-advised comment can go viral and reach millions of people in an instant. This course will give you the skills and confidence to make the most of interview opportunities.
The course will give delegates confidence in three key areas when dealing with the media: understanding the media; message development and delivery; and on camera interviews and analysis.
Topics Covered:
* Understanding the media, and statistics and the media
* Developing key messages
* Responding to media interview requests and preparing for an interview
* Different types of interviews
* Body language
* On camera interviews and analysis
Tutor: John Illman set up JIC in 2001 after working as founder editor of New Psychiatry, editor of GP, medical correspondent of the Daily Mail, Health Editor of The Guardian and medical correspondent of The Observer. He co-ran a science communication course for post graduate students at the University of Cambridge for eight years and spent six years as chair of the Medical Journalists' Association. He has more than 300 broadcast credits and has written seven books.
