Dear GEM,
I wondered whether anyone has any resources or suggestions for
activities (both for schools and family/community audiences) which look
at collecting generally, or cabinets of curiosity.
I have just started developing learning resources for a new exhibition
called Curious Objects -an eclectic collection of the more surprising
objects which Cambridge University Library has accumulated over 600
years. Highlights include a Lithuanian boot, beard clippings posted to
Darwin, and a cardboard trumpet for listening to spirits...
We also have many stories of objects 'lost' to the Library when the
University Museums were established and collections split between them.
I bitterly regret the mummy, in particular! So musings on the nature of
libraries and the rise of museums would also be of interest.
Any thoughts on collection, categorisation and curiosities much appreciated.
If you could reply to me directly ([log in to unmask]) I would
be happy to collate and circulate any replies to anyone who asks!
Many thanks,
Rosie
