Subject: SSQRG AGM and Nominations
Call for SSQRG AGM agenda items
& Call for Nominations for SSQRG Treasurer, Secretary, Website/Social Media Officer, Postgraduate Representative and Ordinary Committee Members
Royal Geographical Society with Institute of British Geographers (RGS-IBG) Space, Sexualities and Queer Research Group (SSQRG)
The RGS-IBG SSQRG promotes and supports research, scholarship, teaching and debate regarding geographies of sexualities and queer geographies within the academic discipline of geography and in dialogue with research, scholarship, teaching and debate in other cognate disciplines and beyond academia. In pursuit of these aims, the group organises national and international conferences and conference sessions, workshops and reading events, and supports academic publications.
SSQRG, moreover, fights discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, sexual practices and gender identity and expression. SSQRG also fights other forms of sexual and gender prejudice through supporting the production and application of knowledge regarding geographies of sexualities and queer geographies, and through supporting dialogue between academics and policymakers, professionals and diverse stakeholders regarding contemporary issues in the geographies of sexualities and queer geographies. SSQRG aims to maximise the involvement of postgraduates and early-career researchers in all of the Research Group's activities.
We are committed to making sure the Committee represents a diverse range of sexualities and gender identities. Scholars from all disciplines are welcome to apply, as long as they have clear academic interest and experience in the relation between sexuality and space.
The Treasurer, Secretary, Website/Social Media Officer and Postgraduate Representative will need to be based in the UK or close enough to attend the regular meetings at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of RGS-IBG to be able to make a commitment to fulfilling the full terms of their elected post. The Treasurer, Secretary, Website/Social Media Officer and Postgraduate Representative must already be, or become, paid hence official member of the RGS-IBG. This requirement will be extended to Ordinary Committee Members for which we have a few number of places the role of Ordinary Committee Member is open to those based in the UK and international scholars. Ordinary Committee Members are expected to be (pro-)active in executing the mission of SSQRG and organising relevant (institutionally co-funded) activities accordingly. Some Committee Members were successful in doing so in the recent past and we wish to pursue this course.
Also Ordinary Committee Members will be requested to become paid RGS-IBG member if they have not yet signed up for formal membership of the RGS-IBG. Information about RGS-IBG membership fee categories can be consulted at http://www.rgs.org/JoinUs/Join+now.htm. Please note that RGS-IBG Research Group funding and therefore its continued existence depends on the number of official Research Group members and it is therefore vital that all elected Committee Members are official members of the RGS-IBG. Members of this listserver who are already registered RGS-IBG Fellows or Postgraduate Fellows are kindly asked to contact the RHED office at [log in to unmask] should they wish to become an official SSQRG member. Please double-check with RHED if you are uncertain about whether you had ticked the SSQRG membership box when you applied for RGS-IBG Fellowship in the past.
The roles of Treasurer, Secretary, Website/Social Media Officer and Ordinary Committee Member shall be held for a period of not more than three years. Postgraduate members shall be elected for a period of one year and shall not normally be eligible for re-election to the Committee for more than three terms of office. Honorary Officers (Chair, Secretary, Treasurer) and the Website/Social Media Officer may stand for a second term of three years, but must relinquish their post after the sixth year of office. Retiring Honorary Officers shall not be eligible for re-election as an Ordinary Member of the Committee if they have served for 6 years, without first having a one-year break from the Committee. Ordinary Committee Members may stand for a second term of three years, but must resign their post after the sixth year of office.
If you are interested in the role of Treasurer, Secretary, Website/Social Media Officer, Postgraduate Representative or Ordinary Committee Member, please send a brief statement and biography to the Secretary, Martin Zebracki, [log in to unmask] by 19 August 2016. In your statement, please address how your interests relate to the rationale and activities of SSQRG. Ensure that the application includes the full name, affiliation, academic status and contact details (email and postal address and phone number) of the proposer as well as seconder.
Committee roles will be formally nominated and seconded at the SSQRG AGM. This year's AGM will take place at the RGS-IBG Annual International Conference on 1 September 2016 during the plenary and lunch session (1:10-2:25PM). Location: Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers, 1 Kensington Gore, London, SW7 2AR. Directions to the SSQRG AGM room will be provided at the conference venue.
By 19 August 2016, Committee Members are invited to propose any AGM agenda items to [log in to unmask] The final agenda will be confirmed closer to the date.
Please confirm AGM attendance at http://doodle.com/poll/zpb46i2qy8u8u565 by 19 August 2016. The AGM is an open event, so we are pleased for non-members to attend as well.
If you would like to receive more information about standing for any of the available roles then please contact the Secretary, Martin Zebracki, at [log in to unmask]
Please visit the website of SSQRG for more information about the Research Group's activities: http://www.ssqrg.rgs.org.
