Hi Melissa,
as already mentioned by George there are lot of reason to keep the
repository in place together with the CRIS system.
I want to highlight a different perspective, instead to accept to use
closed software to manage open content (hopeful that it will remain
really open) why don't try to open a bit the content managed by the
closed system?
Both the DSpace platform than the ePrints platform now provide some
facilities to expose the full range of the CRIS information openly on
the web when appropriate.
Take a look for instance to DSpace-CRIS
https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSPACECRIS
used by many institutions as for example the one from the Polytechnic
University of Hong Kong - http://ira.lib.polyu.edu.hk/
Don't matter which commercial CRIS system do you use, the data that you
provide, refine and validate must remain of your University. Keep the
freedom to valorize them using open technology and ask the commercial
software to pay itself providing better service. DSpace-CRIS is open, if
the Pure connector doesn't work well join the community and we can build
an open, better connector, together to benefit all.
Just my 0.01$
