I agree with Tim--it was nice to see a clear explanation of the experimental steps, and it seemed that both sides were articulate and reasonably good-natured.

I am not entirely sure I understood your point correctly. It appears to me that the reviewers' criticism triggered a very good explanation of the experimental procedures which otherwise would be missing. Hence the criticism was well placed, wasn't it?
I have often received reviews which put me off because I thought the answer was obvious - providing a rigorous answer actually improved the article and made sure I don't take the obvious for granted.
