An Oklahoma State University basketball coach broke down in tears on
Friday as he remembered player Tyrek Coger, who died after collapsing
following a team workout held in extreme heat.
.
During a press conference on Friday, head basketball coach Brad Underwood
said he was in Las Vegas on a recruiting trip when he learned of
22-year-old Coger's death on Thursday.
.
He said the past two days have been the most difficult of his coaching
career.
.
'There is no worse feeling that getting a call about one of your players
that is like this,' Underwood said on Friday.
.
'This is my 30th year as a coach and Ive never, ever had to do this. Ty
was here 17 days. He was a junior college transfer.
.
'It was a great process in terms of his recruitment because as soon as he
got to campus, he fell in love with this place and he fell in love with
what were about. We were in the get-to-know process with him as well in
terms of who he was as a person.'
.
'This is the hardest couple of days I have ever experienced in my coaching
life,' Underwood continued.
'You say goodbye to players when they graduate and thats one thing,' he
said, pausing to wipe away tears with a towel.
.
'Making that phone call to the mother is so...,' he said as his voice
trembled. 'There are no words.
.
The news conference was held just hours before the Oklahoma State Medical
Examiner's Office on said Coger died from an enlarged heart and that the
manner of death was natural.
.
Office spokeswoman Amy Elliott provided the information in an email on
Friday, saying Coger died from cardiomegaly with left ventricular
hypertrophy.
.
The office's family assistance coordinator, Eddie Johnson, told The
Associated Press that the final report is not likely to be ready and
released for another eight weeks.
