Hi all,

I have put together the list of resources that has been shared on the anonymization/sensitive data management thread - on to the research data network site: https://research-data-network.readme.io/v1.03/docs/personal-data-resources

I realise there may be many more that I might have missed, so please feel free to suggest edits.

Kind regards,

Daniela

Hi

Here's a few more resources that you might find helpful:

The Australian National Data Service has a Guide to publishing and sharing sensitive data <http://www.ands.org.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0010/489187/Sensitive-Data-Guide-2016.pdf>,

the guidance on confidentialisation is from page 12 and is partially based on a paper by Iain Hrynaszkiewicz <http://www.bmj.com/content/340/bmj.c181>

med.data.edu.au has guidance on anonymisation <http://med.data.edu.au/anonymisation/>, and refers to the Australian Guidelines for the disclosure of secondary use health information for statistical reporting, research and analysis 2015 <http://www.aihw.gov.au/WorkArea/DownloadAsset.aspx?id=60129553404>, and the American Guidance for methods for de-identification of protected health information in Accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule <http://www.hhs.gov/hipaa/for-professionals/privacy/special-topics/de-identification/index.html>

This is one of the results of many years of efforts in astronomy and virtual observatory data infrastructure development and likely to be of interest both to these lists and wider end users :)

To: [log in to unmask] <[log in to unmask]>

Dear colleague,

The ESAC Science Data Centre (ESDC) is pleased to announce the roll out of the first version of ESASky :

http://sky.esa.int<http://sky.esa.int/>

This new web service provides direct access to public data from ESA Astronomy missions from a simple web interface that requires neither authentication nor prior knowledge of any of the missions. It uses Aladin lite, from the Centre de Données astronomiques de Strasbourg. ESASky allows one to visualise and retrieve public high-level science-ready imaging data products and source catalogs for the following missions: INTEGRAL, XMM-Newton, SUZAKU, HST, Hipparcos, ISO, Herschel and Planck.

It will be kept up to date with the latest data releases from ESA Astronomy missions and will include spectroscopic data and time-domain features in upcoming versions. The ESDC is also working on similar interfaces for Planetary and Heliophysics missions that will be announced at later times.

More detailed information about what can be done with this application can be found at:

http://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/esdc/esasky-help

And in this short (3 min) demonstration video:

https://youtu.be/OfcKznpxUr4

If you would like to receive updates on new datasets or features added to the service in the future, just subscribe to our newsletter:

Subject: Re: Anonymisation advice/training offerings

In terms of the "bathwater" thread, it is perhaps worth noting the fate of a dataset that attempted to follow the Hrynaskiewicz standards (and which is often cited as an example of successful anonymisation), the dataset behind:

Sandercock, P. A., Niewada, M., & Członkowska, A. (2011).

The International Stroke Trial database. /Trials/, /12/, 101.

http://doi.org/10.1186/1745-6215-12-101

This was deposited at the Edinburgh DSpace instance as an open dataset:

     http://datashare.is.ed.ac.uk/handle/10283/128

This is still available, despite doubts about the level of anonymity achieved.

However, the dataset for the subsequent trial (IST-3):

     http://datashare.is.ed.ac.uk/handle/10283/1931

states:

> Please note that, for the time being, in order to comply with UK NHS

> Information Governance, we are only permitted to give access to these

> data to on-site visitors; remote access is not currently available.

which perhaps reflects the difficulty in achieving convincing anonymity, as opposed to simply redacting identifiers?

Yours

Neil
