medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Perhaps the imagery in whatever you're dealing with is more symbolic than naturalistic. It may be mere coincidence but John of San Gimignano's discussion of _salix_ in Book Three of his _De exemplis et rerum similitudinibus_ starts with it as a symbol for sin (not altogether surprisingly, as he's been offering similitudes for _peccatum_) and is followed immediately by _spinae_ cited for the same reason. Subject: [M-R] crown of thorns from willow tree
medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Greetings. I am seeking any medieval Latin or vernacular examples of the crown of thorns being identified as specifically created from a willow tree, either in Life of Christ narratives or scholastic theology (I assume it would have to be carved, as willows don’t have thorns to my knowledge).
Thank you in advance for any leads you might have.
