Dear Paul,
if you are compiling your own version of SPM, please use
config/spm_make_standalone.m - this will create a file called
Contents.txt that will be used by the compiled SPM to get its revision
information.
Note that if you are only calling SPM or FieldTrip functions, you might
not need to compile your own version of these software but instead use
directly the SPM standalone:
