Postdoc and PhD positions in resilience research in Mainz and Frankfurt (Germany)
The new DFG-funded Collaborative Research Center CRC “Neurobiology of resilience to stress-related mental dysfunction” opens
10.5 Postdoctoral and 18 PhD positions
in the areas of cognitive neuroscience, cellular neurobiology, and related fields.
Topic: Stress-related mental disorders such as anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and addiction cause enormous personal suffering and large economic and societal costs. Progress in our understanding of disease mechanisms and, in particular, in the development of new therapies in the last decades has been limited, despite intense research. The incidence of stress-related mental disorders remains high. The CRC intends to complement pathophysiological research with an alternative strategy, which is to investigate protective mechanisms that support the maintenance of mental health during and after adversity (e.g., potentially traumatizing events, challenging life circumstances, physical illness). Focusing on resilience processes rather than on pathophysiology represents a paradigm shift in mental health research and has great potential for the development of new prevention strategies.
Methods: The CRC uses animal model systems (zebrafish, rodents) and performs experimental laboratory as well as observational studies in humans. Methods include advanced epigenetic and proteomic analyses, genetic, optogenetic, pharmacological and neurotechnological (neurofeedback) manipulations, behavioral, psychophysiological
and endocrinological measurements, as well as Calcium imaging, multi-site electrophysiological recordings, EEG, MEG, fMRI, and PET.
People and institutions: The CRC unites basic and clinical researchers from the universities of Mainz and Frankfurt, the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research Frankfurt, and the Institute for Molecular Biology Mainz. The CRC is embedded in the rhine-main neuroscience network (www.rmn2.de), which offers excellent training and interaction opportunities for young researchers, including an integrated MD/PhD and PhD program (www.rmn2.de/rmn2/teaching). The CRC is supported by the Deutsches Resilienz-Zentrum (www.drz.uni-mainz.de) and cooperates with the international resilience alliance (intresa.org).
